This is The Hill

The other day Maggie and I were chatting about the merits of living simply; spending our money to buy time and experience over things. This really got me thinking about reducing or distilling life into it’s most basic elements. In cooking, a reduction is simply a process of heating a liquid until it is reduced to it’s most basic element and flavor.

Memorial Day is right around the corner. With Memorial Day comes Murph – probably the most meaningful workout for all CrossFitters and especially meaningful for us at The Hill. We started this gym on the lawn of the national WWI Museum; hauling wall balls and kettle bells to the base of Liberty Memorial where over 1,000 people came to exercise over the course of several months. Each time we unloaded equipment, we’d walk past all the names of heroes lining the sidewalk. This became our identity – CrossFit Memorial Hill. It pretty much named itself.

In fact, our insignia is an adoption of that of the 35th Infantry Division, which was activated during WWI as National Guard Division from Kansas and Missouri.

The 35th Infantry patch informed our first mark.

Our adoption of the insignia.

“The Hill” quickly became a nickname. Probably because “CrossFit Memorial Hill” is quite a mouthful and, once we moved into the space at 2535 Jefferson, the hill leading up from 25th became a quick torture device effective conditioning tool. I always loved the nickname – it went well on apparel, easy to say, and gave the gym a distinct identity. However, over the last year, this nickname has become increasingly more impactful for me.

This Saturday everyone will finish Murph by coming up that hill leading from 25th. It will suck. After you catch your breath, you’ll mention to a friend how awful it is to finish such a brutal workout on such a brutal hill. But, as you crest that hill there will be a group of people cheering for you, a grill, and plenty of high-fives. You’ll probably make some Memorial Day weekend plans with those very people with whom you now share a bond – a bond forged as you came up that hill.

That’s health and fitness in a nutshell. Strip away all the thrusters and burpees and what do you have? A group of people walking or running up the same hill. Over the last year, my “distillation” or “reduction” has yielded 3 very simple tenets of a full, healthy life: 1. Move functionally, often. 2. Eat reasonably. 3. Help others along the way. That’s the formula. While it’s not easy, it is simple.

This is what The Hill means to me. The Hill represents all the lessons learned over the last 4 years, interactions with over 4,000 athletes at all life stages, and countless thousands of athlete hours in the gym. The Hill is a simplification of philosophy, helping as many people on their journey as possible, and an awesome group of people waiting at the top with a high-five. The Hill is the struggle; that last little bit of your Murph run. The Hill is that group of people at the top waiting with a high-five and a “nice job.”

I’m excited to officially show you the visual representation of this philosophy. Stripped down and simplified to it’s most basic elements. On the surface, it’s a new logo. For me, this new logo represents all the things that you – the athlete – have taught your coaches over the years. We are very grateful for these lessons and look forward to learning more. I’ll see you this Saturday at the top of The Hill.

The Path Forward is the Same

In fitness, we’re always looking back.

What’s your medical history? What other programs have you tried? Do you have a history of orthopedic disfunction? Have you ever worked with a coach before? Did you play sports in high school? And this list goes on…

In fact, I’m always surprised at the history that is divulged when a new athlete comes in the gym. I mean…I’ve heard a lot of unsolicited history.

There’s this weird human inclination to evaluate all the circumstances that have led up to this very moment. Fitness isn’t the only area we do this – family, relationships, career, money, and overall sense of self in society. And, it’s completely normal! One of our biological adaptations is to evaluate trauma, hardship, or mistakes to ensure that they don’t happen again.

A lot of really bad things have happened to a lot of really good people. Often times, there’s no reason or logic behind it. It just happens.

How can we improve our circumstance when we have no control over our circumstance?

Success in career, life, and – especially – fitness lies in one simple fact: The path forward is the same.

In recent episodes of the Podcast, we’ve explored some ways that the industry tries to profit off ignoring this fact – that a nutrition “challenge” will yield positive long-term outcomes, that Saran wrap will reveal your abs, or that “These 8 Exercises Will TORCH Body fat!!!”

But, we’re always faced with the (sometimes harsh) reality that your path to health involves 3 things: 1) Move Consistently, 2) Eat Reasonably, and 3) Support and Be Supported by Others. THAT’S IT! NO JUICES, CLEANSES, CHALLENGES, OR WRAPS.

“But, Matt, you don’t understand my circumstance. I have a busy life with lots of meetings and travel and work and lunch meetings and family and school and I don’t know how to cook.” Or, “I have a thyroid problem or I was born without arms or I have nerve issues.”

You’re absolutely correct – I don’t understand your circumstances. Nobody does and nobody will. Just as you’ll never fully understand anyone else’s. One thing I do know in the core of my being: evaluating the events that led to this current moment will not get you where you want to go – in your health or otherwise. The path forward is the same:

1) Move Consistently

You don’t need anything fancy here. Move functionally, with purpose, safely, and regularly. Find something you love and do it 4-5 hours a week for the rest of your life. Mix it up, train in seasons, and have fun doing it.

2) Eat Reasonably

Sugar won’t kill you. Neither will carbs. Neither will an occasional weekend binge. Real life happens, calories matter, and food has an emotional impact. Be reasonable. Check your relationship with food. Seek professional help where necessary. If you find yourself constantly “challenging,” eliminating, or eating like you’re a freshman in college – fix it.

3) Support and Be Supported by Others

We understand ourselves through a relationship with others. You’re the sum of the 5 people you spend the most time with. All these platitudes on inspirational corporate posters have a nugget of truth. Parents that eat well and exercise have kids that eat well and exercise. People that party hard have friends that party hard. A yawn causes you to yawn; a smile makes you smile. Humans come out of the womb replicating the affect of others and continue to do so throughout the rest of their lives.

Here’s your #3 challenge: Get your “why I can’t/my history/my condition/my schedule/my, my, my, me, I…” out of your head and support someone through their’s. I promise you’ll forget about your own B.S. long enough to see some real progress.

5 Ways You’re Sabotaging Your Fitness

1. Beginning with the end in mind.

This term became popular in entrepreneurial circles. And – when it comes to starting a business – it’s true! As it pertains to your health, fitness, and wellness this couldn’t be further from the truth. Most people begin their journey with “I’d like to lose 20 pounds” or “I’d like to complete a 30-day challenge” or “I want to get in shape.” While these are worthwhile goals, they will always end in failure. Why?…

1. What’s your athletic background?

In first grade, my sister (4 years older than me) and I fought over a penny- one of those special flat pennies that you get at a museum after giving them fifty cents. I lost that wrestling match and ended up with three nail marks down my face that my first grade teacher pulled me aside for to make sure I was “ok at home.” My sister won that fight back then, but today I can back-squat her husband.

2. What was your first experience with CF?

I bought a $25 Groupon for a month of crossfit (3 classes a week). I went and on my first day we did wall balls and deadlifts; neither of which I had even heard of before. When I finished my first class, I had to walk home and then up three stories of stairs to my apartment. I sent my boyfriend, Scott Roberts, a picture of where I was sitting on the second floor staircase because I didn’t think I could make it any further. When I finally made it inside, I took a shower and then passed out on my couch for 4.5 hours. I could barely walk the next few days. I went back to that box one more time during that Groupon month. That’s how they get you.

3. When did you start CF?

March 2014 – but I only went twice that month…I didn’t come back to crossfit and start going more consistently until probably months later.

4. Why did you choose CrossFit Memorial Hill?

It’s 5 minutes away from our office and apartment.

5. What keeps you coming back?

Kayla and Kim.

6. Why do you live in KC and how do you like to spend your free time?

Scott and I met in graduate school in Virginia and moved out here together for a job. We both work at Barkley – he’s a strategist and I’m an art director.
Unfortunately a lot of our free time is spent working because the advertising world doesn’t respect the 9-to-5 🙁 But when we’re able to go out and explore KC, we love Up/Down, alcoholic milkshakes and movies at The Alamo, and basically all the tourist things you do in KC since we’re still new-ish.

Oh and I play with my two adorable kittens: Charlie Hustle and Taco Chalupa Batman. You can fall in love with them on instagram at @ohyouwanttoseemycats

7. What do you like about KC?

Before coming out here, I thought Kansas City would be made of farms with the main population being cows…once we moved here though, I fell in love pretty fast! There’s so much to do and I’m really excited for the summer when I’m sure the number of things to do will triple. I’m still searching for an outdoor or drive-in movie theater and places to hike. It’ll be a good summer.

8. What is one improvement you have seen in your life since starting CF?

My ass.

9. What are your goals for 2016?

1) To be able to run more than a mile without hating every moment of it.
2) To be cured of asthma.

10. What would you say to someone thinking about starting CF?

I usually tell people that they won’t be able to walk for their first week, but then after a month or so you’ll be addicted.

11. What’s your favorite & least favorite CF movement?

Favorite: Back squat. I think I’ve felt the most successful with this one and it’s also great for my butt.

Least favorite: Running. Last week we were running and Coach Z saw how much pain was on my face and asked me if I was injured. No…no I wasn’t 🙁

12. What’s your favorite cheat meal?

My whole diet is a cheat meal.
Joe’s BBQ doesn’t help my Fran time any.

13. Anything else you would like to share with The Hill family?

I really hate Camille Leblanc-Bazinet.
